perspective.

"As a new mom, you will get nothing done. Whole days will go by and you won't remember what you did except feed the baby, change the baby's diapers, get the baby to sleep. Doing "nothing" takes a lot of time. But you've done more by not doing anything than you did in entire days at the office. And it's way more important than anything you've ever done at work. Remember that-it's easy to forget."

parental rites of passage

Waking up in the morning with a small kernel of yellow poo attached to one's forehead.
The baby's first diaper rash almost physically hurts you and you find yourself blowing on a tiny bottom in unison with your spouse.
Falling asleep at the rocking chair, waking up hours later, still rocking.
Discovering that bouncy seat + bathroom fan= mom gets to take a shower.
The first time you use your hand and a little spit to clean a chubby face.

Here's our very confused baby making faces at Julie during a lunch visit the other day.

And snuggled up with daddy last night.

and where was i before the day that i first saw your lovely face?

Dear Claire,
We listened to Ben Folds the morning before you were born. It made me cry then and makes me cry still thinking of the sunshine that Sunday and the hard work and hope. Four weeks ago today my big huge body started getting ready for you to make your escape. I was starting to think you'd never come.

I just fed you and wrapped you up next to your daddy in our bed. This has become our morning tradition and you love to cuddle. I hope this doesn't change. I've watched you make little changes already from the tiny, jawsnapping baby that they cut out of my belly to this little, chubby person who smiles at her own little secret thoughts and gets wide-eyed on walks.

Here you are in your hospital photo. Everyone thinks that their baby really is the most beautiful baby that they've ever seen...but you are a stunner. You, with those racecar driver noises in your sleep and epic toots. I even love you when you're screaming and can't be comforted and I love that the place your one-month old self loves best is with your head curled up on my heart. I know that I am the luckiest.

Love,
Mama

family saturday

We had the best day on Saturday trying out Claire's new wheels. She was unimpressed by the Farmer's Market, but we had a great time.

Here's an action shot of Nate. He always likes to drive.

so nice to see my feet again

We watched some homevideos from a few weeks before Claire was born and it was shocking to see just how much of me there was. This picture was taken at Angelina's going away party at Kondeteri a little less than a week before the bean decided that enough was enough and made her entrance.

some shots from this week

She looks cute now, but ten minutes before this was taken she peed on me.

Here's a signature Claire Curtis move, the full body stretch-out...

typed with one hand

Claire had her first doctor's appointment today. She wore her tiny pink newborn dress that was too huge to come home from the hospital in. She did great. I'm pretty sure I was more nervous than she was. She's now up to 10 lbs 2 oz., and no, Doreen, that doesn't make her a toddler- yet.

The doctor's appointment was much more uneventful than I had imagined and the bean decided to reward herself (and me) for her excellent behavior by taking a second nap today.

Here she is in a rare moment of alertness. The girl just loves her sleep.

she really does open her eyes, i promise...

Nate told me not to put this picture on the blog because the color is funny, but I like it and think that you will too. When I was in (crazy, long, intense) labor with my (extra big) baby girl, we called my mom who quickly got on a plane and made it just in time to see them wheel me in for the c-section. The last two weeks have felt like a trial run because Grandma has been here for every diaper change, every feeding and all of the laundry that Claire (and the rest of us) create. Thank you, Mom. Thanks to Grandbob for sharing your wife. There are few people in this world who consider cleaning my bathtub and diapering my newborn a vacation. I am blessed indeed.

things i forgot to mention...

Claire was 21 inches long and 9 lbs 5 oz at birth. Based on this picture and her love of eating, I'm guessing she's quickly gaining. She eats like a champ. She does this funny little attack face when she's going in for the breast that cracks me up and breaks my heart all at once. If I could manage a picture of it without sharing more of myself than I'm willing to share with the world wide web I would. Here she is after a meal, enjoying a rock out with her Grandma.

she likes the nightlife

Claire has been keeping unusual hours the last few days, and keeping the three adults in the house quite busy. If you see Nate, ask him about the record amount of spit up that she launched at him, it was truly epic.
